How an under-deck ceiling works
A sloped aluminum ceiling installed under your existing joists. It catches the water that falls between your deck boards and carries it to a gutter and downspout.
- 1
Ceiling panels
Sloped aluminum panels catch the water that falls between your deck boards. They clip in, so they can come down for cleaning.
- 2
Flashing at the house
Seals the joint where the deck meets the house so water can't run behind the panels. Most leaks start here, so this is where we spend the most time.
- 3
Panel carriers
Rails fastened under the joists. They hold the panels straight and set the slope toward the gutter.
- 4
Perimeter trim
Channels around the edges hold the panel ends and give the ceiling a clean, finished border.
- 5
Gutter and downspout
Collects the water at the outer edge and sends it where you choose: the lawn, a drain or a rain barrel.

Keeping it clean
Rinse the panels with a hose whenever the house gets its spring wash. For stubborn grime, a mild exterior cleaner and a soft brush work; skip pressure washers and abrasive pads.
Most debris washes out on its own. Pine needles and seed pods can collect at the downspout, so on tree-heavy lots we fit a larger downspout and a cleanout you can open by hand.
